About This Item

Bristol: Not Stated, 1819. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". None. Gawen Ball's compilation of Quaker premonitory writings, which was privately printed and distributed. Extremely scarce. Ball says of himself in the preface that he collected these extracts, "having been from his youth accustomed to the perusal of the journals and other writings of our worthy predecessors in religious profession...". All of the extracts are eschatological in nature. He pleads the "extraordinary aspect of the times" as a reason to bring them to public notice. The work was privately published, and previously belonged to one Benjamin Whitton Carlow, whose personal bookplate can be found to the front pastedown. In a full calf binding, with gilt borders and gilt detailing and titles to the spine. The front joint is tender but still reasonably firm. With some rubbing to the spine and wear to the head and the tail. Some light marking to the boards. With a personal bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally some spotting throughout. Generally firmly bound. Very Good
