Cassell, London, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. 430 g.; X, 258 pages, last two pages blank, intentionally, preface by editor, acknowledgements. Orange coloured boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. A little rubbing and bumping to backstrip edges and to the lower book corners. Browning to the text block edges with faint foxing. Offset scanning, browning and foxing to the endpapers and age toning to the internal text. Photographic front cover, showing Winston Churchill, with a red background and white and black titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the backstrip edges. The dustwrapper panels have become quite rubbed, marked and the rear panel shows handling marks. Browning to the verso of the dustwrapper. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front fold over panel. This is a collection of the finest British speeches from Queen Elizabeth I speech at Tilbury in 1588 on the eve of the fight with the Spanish Amarda, to Winston Churchill's speeches during World War II to William Pitt's speech of 40 words (as he was ill and dying) of " I return you many thanks for the honour you have done me: but Europe is not to be saved by any single man. England has saved herself by her exertions, and will, I trust, save Europe by her example." on the fight to defeat Napoleon -- from the text, page 88.
