About This Item
Chicago: Manning Publishing Company, 1932. First Edition. 6.75 x 10 in stiff pictorial yellow stapled wraps (staple hole on first page, but firmly bound throughout). Covers soiled and rubbed, with a half-inch stain on rear cover that affects page edges. [14 pp.]. VG or better. This volume was part of the Photographing Animal Pets/The Petland Photo Tales Series, which included four other titles (Mr. Bunny and the Magic Pool, The King Who Never Smiled, Circus Day at Catnip Center, and Kittys First Day at the Catnip School). Frees (1879-1953), described as Artist, Photographer and Friend of Animals, notes, Photographing animal pets posed in costume requires an intuitive sense that tells you what a little kitten or puppy or bunny is going to do, before he does it. It also requires an exceedingly fertile imagination and infinite patience
The secret of success is kindness, first, last and all time. Thirteen posed photographs of cats, bunnies, and a dog, dressed as people and doing peopley things (as NPR put it in a 2016 story on Frees and his photography). A curious collection of animal photography from the early 20th century. Uncommon.
