A Very Good+ first Printing of the First Edition with a starting spine hinge and discoloration to the edges of the boards, housed in a dust-jacket in Fine condition; After a lifetime of being a postillion, Dirk Bogarde is finally able to retire. He's content to spend his days riding his horse, eating good food, and drinking good wine. However, Dirk's old friend, the Marquis, needs his help. The Marquis is in debt and needs Dirk to take a letter to America for him. Dirk is hesitant to leave his peaceful life, but the Marquis is insistent. When Dirk arrives in America, he's shocked to find that the country is in the middle of a civil war. He tries to find a way back to England, but is stopped by the Confederate Army. Dirk is captured and sent to a Confederate prison camp. There, he meets a group of inmates who are also trying to escape. Dirk is able to find a way to escape and returns to England, just in time to help the Marquis pay off his debt.; 8vo; 268 pages .
