London: Chapman and Hall, 1847. First "Cheap" Edition. Hardcover. Good. xvi, 479 p. 20 cm. Frontispiece engraving by English painter Charles Robert Leslie and 6 other engraved plates. Original green publisher's cloth with blank impressing. Spine elaborately tooled in gilt. Spine browned, as is usual with this green cloth. Hinges repaired internally. Some wear to corners and spine ends with dents to edges. Armorial bookplate for William Henry Partington on front pastedown with his signature on front free. Small boookseller's label on front pastedown. Dampstained corner on frontispiece. Occasional thumbing and spots.
Volume 1 of the collected works of Dickens with new prefaces and illustrations. Begun in 1847 with works already published, Dickens added further titles to the series as he went along. The quality and ornamentation of these "cheap" editions, however, appears to be just as fine as in his first editions.
