London: Macmillan and Co., 1883. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. EDITION: First state association copy from the library of Henry James' friend 'Charles George Milnes Gaskell' via that of Lady Sybil Grey. CONDITION: Fair. Graded such as the publishers cloth has been mould-stained as a result from having spent a time exposed to damp. Foxing to first and last few leaves. Heraldic ownership roundel of 'Charles George Milnes Gaskell' - 'Scio Cui Credidi' pasted to front pastedown. Paper flap tipped-in to free front endpaper, inscribed 'From the author' in an elegant contemporary hand, beneath which is a folded scrawled letter that seems to describe the provenance in a later hand. EDITION POINTS: First state of only 1000 copies, with authors surname in printed in uniform capitals to spine and this copy with the larger 'M' variant to the publishers first letter. Publishers dark blue/green cloth in the shiny variant of the issue. 7 3/4" x 5". This copy has a publishing error - a duplicate of one of the quires appearing after the prelims. REFERENCING: Edel & Laurence A21 a. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Lady Sybil Grey OBE of Belsay Hall, Northumberland.
