Octavo (21.5cm); orange cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine and front cover; black topstain; dustjacket; 307pp. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $4.75), with some light, scattered foxing to flap edges and a few tiny stains to rear panel. The African-American author's first novel, the principal characters of which are an Irish-American family living in a Brooklyn slum. The protagonist, "a young man of generous and innocent nature," drops out of school and goes to work for the hoodlums who rule his neighborhood after his father abandons the family.
