London; George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1968., 1968. Hard Cover. INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp 168. Original maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine in price-clipped maroon and white dust-jacket. Minor creasing to cloth at spine tips. A clean tight copy inscribed by the Author in year of publication to title page: "To Kathleen Raine S de Madariaga Oxford V 68". Jacket faintly toned to rear white panel and very lightly spine sunned; minor creasing to spine tips and corners. A Near Fine copy in Very Good jacket. Philosophical essay on evolution, life and civilisation by Spanish diplomat and pacifist de Madariaga (1886-1978) who was exiled to England during the Spanish Civil War and was one of the principal contributors to the Oxford Manifesto, only returning to Spain in the 1970s. Northumbrian poet Kathleen Raine (1908-2003) was a research fellow at Girton College in the 1960s.
