About This Item

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1938. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition. lvi, 200pp. Blue cloth, gilt spine. Binding cocked, spine lightly sunned, near fine in a price-clipped, about very good dust jacket with small chips and tears, loss at the spine ends (affecting text), and interior tape repairs. Ownership signature of Edith Lewis on front fly.
Lewis was the lifelong domestic partner, editor, and literary executor of Pulitzer-Prize winning author, Willa Cather. Following Cather's death, Lewis published a memoir of her in 1953 titled *Willa Cather Living.* Historically, Lewis was often overlooked and made into Cather's secretary, which she was not, but rather a professional woman with demanding office jobs as a magazine editor at *McClure's Magazine,* the managing editor of *Every Week Magazine,* and an advertising copywriter at J. Walter Thompson. According to recent work by scholar Melissa Homestead, Lewis shaped Cather's prose alongside her in a sort of "parallel silent activity in domestic space". Their collaborative editing on work at times became "so intertwined they are nearly inseparable." Although often made invisible, it is clear today that Lewis played an essential role in Cather's successful career.
