About This Item

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1925. Second Printing. "B" on copyright page. Octavo. (19.5cm); orange cloth boards stamped in black on cover and spine. 197pp.; spine ends are gently pushed. Near Fine. Sharp copy of Heywards big novel, lacking the dustjacket.

The novel tells the story of Porgy, a crippled street beggar in the black tenements of Charleston, SC in the 1920s. He is based on Charlestonian Samuel Smalls. Some Black characters speak in Gullah, a creole language that had developed among enslaved African Americans during the slavery years on the Sea Islands. The novel was adapted for a 1927 play. George Gershwin made an operatic version of his novel in 1935 as Porgy and Bess and in 1958 Miles Davis recorded a jazz version- Porgy and Bess for Columbia Records featuring a jazz orchestra arranged and conducted by Gil Evans.

Synopsis

Porgy is a novel written by American author DuBose Heyward in 1925, as well as a play Dorothy Heyward helped him to write which debuted in 1927. Even before the play had been fully written, Heyward was in discussions with George Gershwin for an operatic version of his novel, which debuted in 1935 as Porgy and Bess (renamed to distinguish it from the play).
