Hardcover. 8vo - 20.5 x 13.5 cm.; 364 pp. Green cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine and the front board and with double black border rules front and back and decorative black stampings on the head and tail margins of both boards. First published in 1873, this is the third edition. From the title page: "Illustrated by One Hundred and Fifty-Two Wood-Cuts by the best engravers, many of them from original sketches by the author". Present also is the folded map (opens to 71 x 48 cm) tipped in on the front free end paper. The panel by which the map is fastened to the end paper has a closed tear that has been previously taped repaired on the back, otherwise the map is in a very good to near fine condition. The interior is clean otherwise and the binding is solid. The externals show mild to moderate wear (bumped corners, wear to the spine tips and joints) with the major fault being that the spine has a cut in it, 6 cm long from the foot up and another cut of ~ 6 cm near the head. All-in-all a quite presentable copy that could be easily repaired. .
