Lambert Daneau was a French Calvinist known for his controversial books on witchcraft, sorcery, and science in the Bible. While not his magnum opus, 'Politicorum Aphorismorum Silva' was an important book on ancient Greek philosophy, written to cite virtues of the great Greek thinkers. This book was an enormous collection of Greek and Latin aphorisms, which, according to Hall

"indicates Daneau's broad knowledge of Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Isocrates, Pliny the Younger, etc. His synthesis of these authors provided students with useful abridgments of previous political thought."

This particular 16th-century edition of Daneau's 'Aphorisms' was published in Leiden by the famed Dutch print house Plantin Press.
