The Poetical Works of Mrs. Felicia Hemans. Vol. 1. Published in 1832 by Thos. T. Ashe, Philadelphia PA. This miniature, 2.5 x 3.75 inch, book is bound in embossed red leather. Frontis illustration of "The Brigand Chief". Scarce vintage miniature ot often seen in this edition. Felicia Dorothea Hemans (25 September 1793 – 16 May 1835) was an English poet. Her first book of poetry, dedicated to the Prince of Wales, was written at the age of 14 and caught the attention of Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom she corresponded with for a while. Her works appeared in nineteen different books in her lifetime and after her death were republished widely. Two of her opening lines, The boy stood on the burning deck and The stately homes of England, have acquired classic status.Condition: The covers are worn and rubbed. The front cover is held on by the binding threads. The spine is heavily chipped. There is soiling age toning, small chips to corners, and lacking the last page of text (27 lines of The Childe's Destiny) and rear end paper.See Photos wb8

Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing, mild to end-papers and text-block edges. Heavy cracking at the hinges with exposed binding material. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout however binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Peeling and loss to spine leather. Mild crushing to spine ends. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains.

Approx 1860's .595 PP. Hardback quarter Suede or leather. Faded gilt decoration, sunned Leather spine. Inch split on top sides of spine but binding overall strong and solid. Four raised bands and gilt on somewhat scuffed spine. There are some loose pages in a couple of places in the book but none missing as far as I can see. There are engravings throughout the volume. The frontispiece illustration is clean and unfaded, and with its tissue guard in place. Text framed by red graphic lines throughout volume. All the type is unfaded and legible. There are no stamps or other attachments. I've found no writing in the body of the book. Happy to answer any questions and will gladly email a scan of book.

Leather modestly rubbed along edges and at corners, toned to a medium brown on spine panel.
