Front cover and spine have elaborate red & black floral & leaf designs and the name "Whittier" in gilt. Front cover also has the word "Illustrated" and a circular frame with an illustration of a rural home with a water well and a cobbled road. Black and white illustrations. All page edges gilt. Brown coated endpapers. Name in ink on title page. Black & white frontispiece with tissue guard. Corners and spine ends bumped and rubbed, with fraying at tips and spine ends. Boards exposed at corners. Both hinges partially cracked, but still strong. Light scratch on front cover. Covers lightly rubbed. Back cover has a few abrasions. A few pages have light pencil marks in margins. Some pages have a small brown spot. Pages lightly tanned. Otherwise, pages clean and unmarked. 336 pages. No dust jacket.
