Books measure 190mm x 135mm approximately.
Two volumes, half bound in dark crimson calf over double gilt-ruled marbled boards. Spine with four gilt-ruled raised bands with elaborate gilt tooling work to compartments and twin black title and volume labels. Top page edges in gilt. Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece to title page verso.
CONDITION
Overall, in reasonable condition. Each volume is holding firm although front boards are a little weak. Spines and boards show some scuffs and marks with rubbing along all hinges, and bumping to corners. Upper author labels are missing. Internally the pages are remarkably clean throughout although with heavier foxing to end-papers. Small neat ink signature to the front end-paper of volume 1.
Please refer to the photo images for a clear indication of both condition and content.
INTERESTING
Arthur Hugh Clough (1819 to 1861) was an English poet, an educationalist, and the devoted assistant to Florence Nightingale. He was the brother of suffragist Anne Clough and father of Blanche Athena Clough who both became principals of Newnham College, Cambridge.
Clough's output is small and much of it appeared posthumously. Anthony Kenny notes that the editions prepared by Clough's widow, Blanche, have "been criticized ... for omitting, in the interests of propriety, significant passages in Dipsychus and other poems." But editing Clough's literary remains has proven a challenging task even for later editors. Kenny goes on to state that "it was no mean feat to have placed almost all of Clough's poetry in the public domain within a decade, and to have secured for it general critical and popular acclaim.
