CONDITION

The binding is in reasonable to good condition and holding (just). Both boards are cracked along most of their length and are being held by the cords. Internally the pages are generally clean although toned and dusty throughout with some showing foxing patches and occasional spots. The paste-downs and end-papers have greater foxing with staining to margins generally clean although a little dusty, with random foxing patches and spots, and some margin staining to end-papers. The front end-paper is almost disbound.

A large weighty volume in its original binding, still in reasonable condition, and the first collected edition of Churchill's works.

INTERESTING

Charles Churchill (1732 to 1764) was an English poet and satirist. Churchill was born in Westminster and educated at Westminster School, where he became a good classical scholar, and formed a close and lasting friendship with Robert Lloyd. He was admitted to St John's College, Cambridge. Churchill's poetry and writings were mainly from a satirical perspective and although popular within many circles, also made him political enemies.
