London: Chiswick Press for Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1883 First Edition Thus, this Large Paper Edition limited to only 50 copies, of which this is No. 24. Signed by the Printer, "Charles Whittingham Co." on the Limitation Page, dated January 1883. Collophon at rear: "Chiswick Press--Charles Whittingham Co., Tooks Court, Chancery Lane." **Hard cover, 8vo, in a fine binding by Ramage, in full green crushed morocco gilt, with a double rule framing boards, the spine with five raised bands, gilt titles to the second compartment on a burgundy label. The remaining compartments are double ruled and feature sprigs of three, four-leaf clovers. Top edge gilt. Inside, are glazed marbled endpapers, veined in gold, cream and reds, with a wide leather turn in rolled with a neoclassical floral design. A former owner's modern bookplate is on the inside front cover. A tissue-guarded frontispiece engraving entitled "The Palace of Art" is opposite the rubricated title page of Volume I --see poem, page 218, while Vol. 2 features "St. Simeon Stylites," with the associated poem on page 69.** 2 Volumes: Volume 1: [6] [i-v], vi-vii, 1-321, [7]pp.; Volume 2: [8]pp., [v]-vi, [1-3], 4-271, [6] pp. **CONTENTS: Vol.1: Dedication, " Juvenalia," "The Lady of Shallot and Other Poems." Vol. 2: "English Idylls, and Other Poems," "Tithonis, "Locksley Hall," "Godiva," "The Day-Dream," and others as seen in photo.**CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Rubbing at outer joints. The spine and outer edges of boards show oxidation of the green color to brown. A few small scrapes to boards, more so at the back of Vol.1., and five small scrapes to the spine. Inside, the book is almost pristine, with clean, bright pages. Modern bookplate. One pencilled notation left to vol. 1 ffep.**Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) was appointed Poet Laureate to Queen Victoria in 1850, and was to be offered a peerage by William Gladstone in the year this volume was published, despite having turned down a number of honors offered him previously. This set has some of his best known works, arranged attractively with one poem per page when possible, inviting unhurried consideration. OCLC 8705737.
