Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government.. 1859.. Lithograph, hand colored, image area approximately 9 x 6 3/4 inches on sheet 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Very good condition. An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is marked plate VIII, depicting a black winged, white breasted bird in a grassy landscape with water foreground. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird. The region noted at the top left of this plate is California. .
