Description:
New York: Macmillan, 1951. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First American edition. Translated from the French by Frances Frenaye. Fine in very good dustwrapper with some chipping and rubbing. An historical novel of the 18th Century discovery of Goddess Island, a seal mating ground, the ensuing slaughter of the animals, and the massacre's affect upon the Russian captain of the expedition. An interesting work, reminiscent of Conrad and Melville in its psychology, but well ahead of its time in its conservationist tone.
