Charming Victorian rural scene by a pioneering Australian lithographic artist.

John Skinner Prout was "the first itinerant painter in the colonies whose work ceases to be dominated by the requirements of topographical accuracy" (Smith, European Vision in the South Pacific). He arrived in the colony in 1841 and began lecturing at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts and sketching around Sydney He made extensive sketching tours of New South Wales, before travelling to Van Diemen's Land in January 1844 where he worked for four years before returning to England.
