San Francisco: Undercurrent (In Cooperation with New Student Review), 1968. Original wraps. Very Good +. Bill Brach. The 1968 1st (and only) edition of this legendary Richard Brautigan offering, a pictorial folder (with 3 sepia photos on the front cover by Bill Brach) containing 8 separate packets of seeds, with Brautigan poems printed on each packet. Originally distributed for free in March 1968, everything about the book's composition is firmly of the period. A solid, well-preserved copy to boot, with all 8 seed packets unopened and in Fine condition. Very light soiling to the panels, one tiny chip along the front panel's upper tip, mild glue staining where the interior flaps housing the packets had originally been (and still are) glued to the inside of the covers. Printed by the redoubtable Graham McIntosh, who went on to a long, very productive collaboration with John Martin and his Black Sparrow Press. This copy also includes a printed, folded single sheet issued by the book's publisher (Undercurrent), describing the 8 packets of seeds (Shasta Daisy, Lettuce, California Native Flowers, Squash, Calendula, Parsley, Carrots and Sweet Allysum Royal Carpet) in detail. The sheet states at the top of one side: "This issue of UNDERCURRENTS is printed in memory of Jacob Titelbaum" and on the bottom of the reverse side: "PACKED FOR THE 1970-1971 SEASON"

Description:
San Francisco: Graham Mackintosh, 1968. First Edition. First edition. Stiff cream wraps containing eight unopened seed packets with a short Brautigan poem on each side, planting instructions on the other. Very Good+ or better with slight toning and shelf wear to wraps, offsetting to fore edge from glued flaps (some copies of this book had glued flaps, others didn't; no known priority), some light staining to seed packets from contents. Nice shape overall. All packets present, unopened, containing their original seeds for planting in the 1968-1969 season. Four of the seed packets were flowers, the other four were vegetables. A rare and unique poetry book from the author of Trout Fishing in America, metaphorically connecting the flower generation to its successors, the back-to-the-land and environmental movements.
