Uniform matching hard back binding in contemporary calf, spine in six compartments with three red and black Morocco labels, (gilt author on red, volume number and title on black), London and date to the foot, gilt centre tools, lines and details, gilt barley twist design and three ruled gilt lines to the front and rear board perimeters, gilt lines to the edges and returns, black and brown marble page edges and end papers 8vo. 8½'' x 5½''. Portrait frontispiece to volume I. Engraved vignettes to title pages of each volume and to the title pages of each individual play. Volume One also containing Rowe's "Life of Shakespeare" and the text of his will. Corners rubbed and turned-in, small chips to the spine ends of volumes VI and X, volume VIII rebacked with new piece of leather added to the top of the spine, volume I rebacked and with new matching rear board, two contemporary ink names to each second front free end paper, without any foxing or age toning to the text block. Gilt decoration on spine, two spine labels on each volume with gilt lettering. Covers are lightly worn, corners, edges and spine ends are a little rubbed. Bindings are sound. Volume 1 contains black and white frontis portrait of Shakspeare. Marbled end-papers and block edges. Light foxing to prelims in some volumes, pages and text is clean, crisp and bright. 8 of the volumes have a previous owners name handwritten on front free end-papers. Volume I also contains 'Some Account of the Life &c. of William Shakspeare' by Mr Rowe. and 'Dr. Johnson's Preface to his Edition of Shakspeare's Plays, Printed in 1765'. 10-volume set (complete). London: F and C Rivington, 1804. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo.. Samuel Johnson's edition of nine volumes. Tan calf boards with gilt lines. Gilt bands to spines and gilt lettering and numbering. Lettering has faded. Edges are bumped and there is fading and scratching to boards but the bindings are uniformly tight and well presented. Internally the endpapers are of grey paper with the slight marks of a removed bookplate on Vol I and IX. Internally the pages are age-tanned but generally clean and bright. Dr Johnson's preface is included in Vol 1 together with an historical acount of The English Stage by Mr Malone. Engravings by Fuseli face the frontispiece of each play, Vol II has light foxing and slight rippling. Vol III has cream endpapers and the front hinge is just beginning to crack.
