Printed for John Stockdale, Piccadilly, London, 1807. 1807., 1807. Uniform matching hard back binding in half burgundy leather, five raised bands to the spines with gilt title lettering and list of plays between two sections, top edges gilt, fore edges untrimmed, pink pebble cloth covered boards, gilt ruled lines to boards and corners, burgundy marble end papers on thick card stock. 4to 13'' x 11''. First published in 1773, this 1807 printing is beautifully illustrated with 11 full page monochrome plates and 11 vignettes engraved by Heath after Stothard, Fuseli and Hamilton, all with tissue guards. The text block is clean and white with only light foxing on the few first and last pages, the heaviest being to the plates, rubbing to the edges of the spines, corners and across the raised bands, bindings are tight and sound, stunning set. Weighs 27 kg. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Gilt decoration on spine, two spine labels on each volume with gilt lettering. Covers are lightly worn, corners, edges and spine ends are a little rubbed. Bindings are sound. Volume 1 contains black and white frontis portrait of Shakspeare. Marbled end-papers and block edges. Light foxing to prelims in some volumes, pages and text is clean, crisp and bright. 8 of the volumes have a previous owners name handwritten on front free end-papers. London: F and C Rivington, 1804. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo.. Samuel Johnson's edition of nine volumes. Tan calf boards with gilt lines. Gilt bands to spines and gilt lettering and numbering. Lettering has faded. Edges are bumped and there is fading and scratching to boards but the bindings are uniformly tight and well presented. Internally the endpapers are of grey paper with the slight marks of a removed bookplate on Vol I and IX. Internally the pages are age-tanned but generally clean and bright. Dr Johnson's preface is included in Vol 1 together with an historical acount of The English Stage by Mr Malone. Engravings by Fuseli face the frontispiece of each play, Vol II has light foxing and slight rippling. Vol III has cream endpapers and the front hinge is just beginning to crack.
