About This Item

Abelard-Schuman Ltd, London & New York, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fine Condition/Good. Book This is a rare hardcover for Whittington, who was known as the “King of the Paperbacks,” writing over 200 novels under several different names, most in the crime, hardboiled detective and noir genres, as in this case. According to the blurb on the rear fold, he had written over 50 books by 1957. Not only was this novel published as a hardback, the blurb reports, "With Play for Keeps he is for the first time published simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain." Size: Small Octavo (7 1/2-8"). 170 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight and unmarked. The pages are clean although they have browned from edge. Fine copy of a well taken care of hardback covered in deep burgundy cloth over boards with the title in bright silver on the spine. No sun-fading to the cloth; tips are sharp. Head and foot of the spine show minimal shelfwear. Good+ unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket. Although it is not in the best of shape, it did its job of protecting the book and retains the colorful pulp illustration on the front panel. There is a fold right down the middle of the front panel, which also shows rubbing along the top and bottom edges. Large chips at the upper right of the dust jacket and head of the spine, neither affecting any text. There are a couple of large chips at the bottom of the rear panel, also not affecting any text. Smaller chips along the top edge of the rear panel and front and rear folds. The dust jacket is protected by a clear sleeve. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Crime Fiction; United States; 1950s; Antiquarian & Rare.
