About This Item
Chicago: National Party, 1917. Pamphlet. 14p. staplebound booklet, 3.5x6 inches, pages toned. Cover has pencil notations: "Pro-War Socialist Party, 1917... Spargo et al" (the latter being a reference to the participation of John Spargo, listed among the officers as Director of Propaganda and Education). The Chicago-based National Party was founded by defectors from the Socialist Party who opposed its 1917 anti-war position, joined by members of the Nonpartisan League and others from the Prohibition Party, suffragist and Single Tax movements. This platform states that "We entered the war to resist international aggression and lawlessness, to establish a permanent basis for international peace, and to aid the movement toward democracy in all lands. Believing that these aims are coincident with the best interests of all free peoples, and even those of the people of Germany, and confident that this nation will not forget these aims nor permit our forces to be used for conquest or imperialistic oppression, we pledge our full and undivided support to our nation and its allies in the pursuit of these aims." (pp. 11-12). Also includes planks in support of universal suffrage, an endorsement of prohibition, and a section on industrial democracy.
