Elephant folio, 20 1/8 x 14 inches (512 x 356 mm), title, deidication, iv + susbcriber and plate lists, 20 pp plate descriptions; 55 engraved plates numbered 1-74 (the 15 double-page and 4 folding plates each with two plates numbers) by J. June, H. Mackworth, P. Mazell, J. Miller, T. Morris, J.S. Müller, F. Patton and T. White after designs by Paine. Half bound in tan calf with dry stamped decorative borders; boards covered in red and blue marbled paper, edges bumped and worn, boards rubbed; penicl notations inside front cover. Paper generally clean and supple with occasional foxing; binding tight.

[ESTC T135969; Archer 243.1; Harris 664; Lowndes IV, p.1761; Upcott p. XXXIII]. An imposing and elegant elephant folio comprising some of James Paine's most important works. Featuring designs for completed buildings, mostly in the Palladian style including Sandbeck, Axwell, and the magnificent stables at Chatsworth. The plates and text describe buildings in the counties of Derby, Durham, Middlesex, Northumberland, Nottingham and York. The second part including the interiors of some of the same buildings and also covering buildings in several other counties was not published until 1783.

The architect JAMES PAINE (1717-1789) was a neo-classicist whose designs include Chatsworth, Sandbeck, and Axwell Park among many others. He was a favourite architect of the powerful Catholic families of the time and he held various posts in the Office of Works, the entity that oversaw the building and maintenance of the royal castles and residences.
