About This Item

London: William Day, 1854. One blank margin a little chipped (with no loss), very good condition.. Lithographed plan; 340 x 425 mm.

Attractive English map of Cape Town, showing the street plan of the city with detail of public parks and thoroughfares, the waterfront onto Table Bay, cemeteries, hospitals, quarries and the like. The lower portion of the sheet is decorated with a tranquil vista of shipping in the bay against the backdrop of Table Mountain.

The map was printed in London by the younger William Day (1823-1906), lithographer by appointment to Queen Victoria. Day is remembered as an innovative publisher who offered interesting maps including the North Atlantic ice fields, telegraphic lines of Europe and steamship routes between Europe and America. As a leading London printer, Day flourished in his role as editor of the trade journal "The Chromolithographer" during the 1850's.
