About This Item
The Pirate by the Author of "Waverley, Kenilworth, &c [Sir Walter Scott] In Three Volumes; Edinburgh:Printed for Archibald Constable and Co.; And Hurst, Robinson, and Co., London 1822 First Edition. With Half-Titles, Uncut.
In original half leather binding.*From the Library of* *THE LATE MR. LIONEL BENCRAFT, OF BARNSTAPLE. A handsome mural tablet has just been placed in the parish church, Barnstaple, to the memory of the late Mr. Lionel Bencraft. The deceased filled the office of Town Clerk for years.
Research indicates that this edition was rushed to press because they were preparing the play of the same name for the London stage for early 1851.
This is the first edition , with half-titles. Vol 2 reads "there" instead of "their" at the end of line 20 on page 17. There is a semicolon after the first "Co." of the imprint on the title page of Vol. 1.
With its provenance and its lovingly restored "original" condition, this is worthy of a beautiful, authentic gift for any Sir Walter Scott enthusiast.
Condition: This all-original three volume set is in its original half-leather binding from 1822 as shown. With its half titles and uncut state, it is a beauty to behold as shown. It was professionally restored so that bindings are firm and half leather binding is still original but now ready for its next 200 years!
We found no additional writing within the book beyond the title pages as shown in the photos. A book plate for the library of Lionel Bencraft in all volumes...a lawyer and the town clerk for the town of Barnstaple for many years. Edges have been sealed.
