" 'The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea' is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1824 (though the earliest edition is actually dated 1823). Its subject is the life of a naval pilot during the American Revolution. It is often considered the earliest example of nautical fiction in American literature."

In the 1849 preface to his own novel, James Fenimore Cooper (1789 - 1851) tells of his reaction to what he considedred the paltry knowledge of seamanship evinced in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Pirate: 'The result was a sudden determination to produce a work which, if it had no other merit, might present truer pictures of the ocean and shops than any that are to be found in The Pirate . . . '
Fromt its first appearance in 1824, The Pilot met with such success that, as Cooper himself recognized, sea tales came into vogue. They have since been penned by authors as early as Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville, and as prolific as Jack London and Jospeho Conrad.
A son of the wealthy landowner who founded Cooperstown, New York, Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey. By 1811, after being expelled from Yale University and then spending a brief period as a sailor, Cooper occupied himself as a gentleman farmer in Westchester County, New York. He published the first of his fifty novels in 1820; . . . "
