Binding of purple cloth with five low ridges on spine, gilt titled, with decoration. Spine sunned. Clean with light rubbing to corners and spine ends. Top edge gilt. Fore-edge and lower edge of text block have a couple of pale smudged areas. Tight and solid sewn binding. A foxing spot on paste-down-didn't find any anyplace else. Frontis tissue protected, captioned in green on side facing frontis illustration, after the original drawing by Albert Lynch, in browntones. Chapter headings illustrated with small line drawings. Internals clean, no marks, no creases. Guy de Maupassant's stories have a self-renewing vitality, assuming fresh force for each generation of readers with changing standards. A French short story writer and novelist of the 19the Century (1850-1893) and a sometimes member of the naturalist school (but mostly his own 'school' which is hard to classify). He chose for subjects chiefly from Norman peasant life, the Franco-Prussian War, the behavior of the bourgeoise, and the fashionable life of Paris. 320 pages. 5.25 x 8 inches. Publisher: The Review of Reviews Co., New York, 1903.
