About This Item

1954: Faber and Faber, 1954. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition copy of this humorous novel by poet Randall Jarrell, which satirises academic life, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. First Edition. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. This is a humorous novel by Randall Jarrell, described as an 'academic satire' which focuses upon the oddities of academic life. The narrator teaches at a women's college called Benton and provides humorous observations of his students, including one novelist named Gertrude who is based on novelist Mary McCarthy. Randall Jarrell (1914-1965) was an American poet, literary critic, and children's author. Jarrell acted as the eleventh Consultant in Poetry to the Library of congress, which was later amended to the title of 'Poet Laureate'. Jarrell was awarded a variety of titles and awards over the years, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a grant from the National Institute of Art and Letters, and the National Book Award for Poetry in 1961. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with minimal bumping to extremities and light discolouration to the top edge of boards and spine. Offsetting to endpapers from dust wrapper. Dust wrapper is smart, with edge wear and chipping to the edges of wraps and age-toning to the wraps, including the fly leaves and the reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Very Good Indeed
