Jonathan Cape, 1948. Hardcover. Acceptable. 1948. Seventh Impression. 303 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Contains black and white illustrated frontispiece, with other illustrations throughout. Colour maps to endpapers. Pages are mildly tanned and foxed, but text remains clear. Noticeable marking to some pages throughout; text is not obscured. Binding is firm. Boards have light shelf-wear, with minor corner bumping and minimal scuffing to edges. Spine is slightly tanned, with noticeable crushing and slight splitting to ends. Gilt remains bright. Heavy rubbing and scuffing overall, with some small marks also. Book has a slight forward lean.

Synopsis

Arthur Ransome was born in 1884. He was in Russia in 1917 and witnessed the Revolution, which he reported for the Manchester Guardian. After escaping to Scandinavia, he settled in the Lake District of England with his Russian wife where, in 1929, he wrote Swallows and Amazon s. Thus began a writing career that has produced some of the best children’s literature of all time.
