In 1931, after graduating college, Welty returned to Jackson, where a few years later she joined the WPA, part of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Traveling through Mississippi opened her eyes to the misery of the Great Depression, and resulted in this series of photographs, eventually published as One Time, One Place. N. B.
