[Vassar College]. Photo archive of 36 black and white silver gelatin photos showing Vassar students participating in the Class Day Parade with its traditional daisy chain, Commencement ceremonies, campus views and students at work in the campus garden. Photos range in size from 4.5" x 2.75" inches to 8" x 10". Photos are marked by year including 1923, 1924, 1925, 1930, 1947. The archive includes 12 silver gelatin photos of the daisy chain, one of the school's oldest and most famous traditions. Every year a group of sophomore women are chosen for their leadership skills and school spirit to carry a 150-foot chain of daisies and laurel at Commencement. The women are known as the "daisies" and are an active campus group, helping with Commencement week and forming an aisle to guide the graduates to ceremony. The students wear white dresses that slowly change style over the course of the decades. A clipping attached to one photo notes the chain is worn by "the 22 prettiest sophomores." The collection includes 19 silver gelatin photos of Commencement Day ceremonies including spectators. One photo shows a man watching with an open smile, a little girl perched on his shoulders to get a better view. photos show a range of views including an entire graduating class, processing faculty and crowd views. Also includes photos of Taylor Hall, the campus' stately entry with ornate stonework and clock tower. Also include a few photos of Vassar students participating in a nurses training camp. Vassar College is a private liberal arts college in New York. Founded in 1861 it was the second degree-granting institution of higher education for women in the United States. The college is one of the historic Seven Sisters, the first elite women's colleges in the U.S., and has a historic relationship with Yale University. This archive documents Vassar's campus life and traditions during the first half of the 20th century. An important part of the history of women's education.
