London: printed for C. Davis, Printer to the Royal Society, opposite Gray's-Inn-Gate, Holborn, 1752. First Edition. Full Calf. First edition. 8vo: xvi,276,[12]pp, with a folding engraved plate Original full calf, rebacked with original spine, richly gilt in six compartments, recent black morocco lettering piece gilt, plain period end papers. A Very Good copy, binding tight and secure, boards lightly scuffed, evidence of small circular label removed from front paste down, text generally clean (margins of first and last few leaves browned, sporadic foxed throughout), plate fresh and bright. ESTC Citation No. T148535. Cole Library 1513. First Edition of this fascinating glimpse into religious belief, and its effect on the scientific method, of the eighteenth century, including a discussion of the reproduction systems of both animals and plants. The folding plate displays the similarities of a polyp to a tree branch and compares the various functions of each part. Because of its apparent existence on the boundary between plant and animal species and its unique reproductive behavior (It reproduces asexually, by budding off smaller versions of itself, and can regenerate its complete body when cut or otherwise injured), the polypus, or hydra, generated much comment among natural historians. Biologists have even argued, because of the way polyps regenerate from "immortal" tissue, that it is one of the only living things that does not age. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Description:
London: Printed for C. Davis, Printer to the Royal Society,, 1752. First edition of Parsons's scientific analysis of natural reproduction. The work is complete with a detailed fold-out plate, engraved after an original drawing by Parsons, which depicts the propagation of a polypus fungus and a tree branch. James Parsons (1705-1770), physician, antiquary, and foreign secretary to the Royal Society, is perhaps best known for his relationship with William Hogarth. Shearer West argues that the two men's appreciation of one another's work informed their respective studies of human physiognomy. As in this work, illustration directly complemented Parsons' investigations: Giles Hudson observes that most of Parsons' papers featured "detailed plates drawn faithfully from life with his own hand" (ODNB). The present work illustrates a lesser-known aspect of Parsons's studies. In the Philosophical Observations, Parsons outlines a theory of natural propagation that implies the agency of a divine creator, in…
