New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1849. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. 206p. Bound in quarter gray-brown publishers cloth with plain paper boards. Carefully re-backed preserving the original spine and paper spine label (worn). Rubbing and wear present to the extremities and boards. Interior is generally clean but with occasional areas of mild scattered foxing as well as some age-toning along the outer edges of the margins. A name and a date (1858) are written in an early hand on the front free fly-leaf. This treatise on superstition and on supernatural beliefs is written by a medical doctor. Chapters are dedicated to discussing witchcraft, dreams, ghosts, ecstasy, trance, homoeopathy, mesmerism, animal fascination or charming and credulity in medicine. According to the preface: "It has been the authors object to allude to the mental origin of the various popular superstitions that have extensively prevailed among mankind at different periods, and briefly to illustrate the physiological and mental influences by which they have been fostered and strengthened
