About This Item

London: George Philip & Son, 1922. Blue decorative cloth covers, quarter leather, gilt lettering. Some rubbing, exp. front right cover, but binding solid. This ninth edition had been revised, with a detailed explanation as to the need for more comprehensive information in the preface. The original work had been published in 1904. The specific stated intent of this atlas was "enabling the Ocean Highways throughout the World to be dealt with in the most comprehensive manner possible". All maps tipped in and present. Includes 2 double page images of the national and mercantile flags, a commercial chart of the world, 27 sea charts, 5 physical maps, and a speed-time-distance graph. This is fully indexed. The charts include all the known sea routes for both eastern and western hemispheres, with enormous detail on each of the double elephant folio plates. This is a scarce and striking atlas, and a fine example of early 20th century advances in thematic maps of the sea lanes. . Ninth. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.

About The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books

The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books is owned and operated by Joel & Deborah Kovarsky. We first opened in 1998, but have had a decades-old interest in old maps, books, and paper, stemming from a comparable long-standing interest in how knowledge is used. Our business is run via the internet. We do not run an open shop, however we do welcome visitors by appointment only. Before attempting a visit, please contact us. We are a specialty business, dealing in antiquarian maps and related books (atlases, history of cartography, selected reference books, etc.). Please feel free to contact us for specific inquiries.
