Garden City, New York:: Doubleday & Company, 1968.. Book of the Month Club Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: burgundy cloth with gilt spine text (a step up from a typical Doubleday binding); a Near Fine book, with a Good+ dust jacket. The jacket would be Very Good but for spine fading. The front panel color is bright.. 8vo (about 8.5 inches tall) . Black endpapers. Description: Includes four short sections of black and white photo plates. Introduction by John le Carre. The following is from ''A Report by Drew Middleton'' the BOMC insert, 1968): ''The shabby, twisted, exciting histories of H A R (Kim) Philby, Donald MacLean and Guy Burgess are certain to inspire dozens of books. But it seems likely that no other book in the future will catch so well as this one does the personalities of the three British traitors and, equally important, the flavor of that sad, aimless, upper-class group from which they came, so unrepresentative of their country's best and so damningly damaging to its interests.. This tells, as far as the authors are able, the histories of the three oddly assorted men. Philby is the central character and deservedly so. Here is a man who sold himself to the Soviets in the 1930s and for nearly thirty years managed to keep the sale a secret while rising during the same period to become a central figure in the Secret Intelligence Service of his country.'' Middleton goes on to explain that he knew Philby in 1939. This copy includes the BOMC insert.
