A & C Black, Edinburgh,, 1871. 8vo., with a frontispiece engraved by Watt after Bonnington (original tissue guard present), fine title-vignette engraved by Booth, 6 fine engraved topographical plates and an engraved portrait, neat inscription on blank preliminary; handsomely bound in contemporary red half calf, marbled boards ruled in gilt, decorative back gilt extra with five raised bands, compartments richly tooled in gilt with a thistle between four floral sprays, second compartment with morocco label lettered in gilt, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, very neatly rebacked else a bright, firm, virtually spotless copy in splendid period binding. With a personal pictorial bookplate on front paste-down. The fine topographical plates depict locations from the novel: Peak Castle Derbyshire (Richardson after Leitch), Haddon Hall (Horsburgh after Leitch), Peel Castle Isle of Man (Miller after Leitch), Glen Mary Isle of Man (Forrest after Leitch), Liverpool 1664 (Finden after Austin) and The Tower [of London] 1670 (Finden after Roberts). The seventh plate is a portrait of George Villiers Duke of Buckingham engraved by Shaw. A lovely copy ideal as a gift or for presentation.
