(8.7 x 5.8 x 0.4 inches). Revised Educational Edition with Introduction, Notes, Vocabulary, and Bibliography based on those prepared by John Richardson Miller or Vassar College. Profusely illustrated in color. Language: French with textual helps etc. In English. Houghton Mifflin 3-37632. First published in France in 1943. This Edition published in 1970; appears to be a later printing of 1975. Paperback. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900 – 1944) , was a French writer, poet, journalist and pioneering aviator. He received several prestigious literary awards for his novella The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) and for his lyrical aviation writings, including Wind, Sand and Stars and Night Flight. They were translated into many languages. Saint-Exupéry was a successful commercial pilot before World War II, and joined the French Air Force at the start of the war, flying reconnaissance missions until France's armistice with Germany in 1940. After being demobilised by the French Air Force, he travelled to the United States to help persuade its government to enter the war against Nazi Germany. Saint-Exupéry spent 28 months in America, during which he wrote three of his most important works, then joined the Free French Air Force in North Africa, even though he was far past the maximum age for such pilots and in declining health. He disappeared and is believed to have died while on a reconnaissance mission from Corsica over the Mediterranean on 31 July 1944. The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince) is a novella. It was first published in English and French in the United States by Reynal & Hitchcock in April 1943 and was published posthumously in France following liberation (Saint-Exupéry's works had been banned by the Vichy Regime). The story follows a young prince who visits various planets, including Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Despite its style as a children's book, The Little Prince makes astute and penetrating observations about life, adults, and human nature. All of the novella's simple but elegant watercolour illustrations, which were integral to the story, were painted by Saint-Exupéry himself. The Little Prince became Saint-Exupéry's most successful work, selling an estimated 140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling in history. The book has been translated into over 505 different languages and dialects worldwide, being the second most translated work ever published, trailing only the Bible. The Little Prince has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film, television, ballet, and opera. This Educational Edition of the contemporary masterpiece features full-color reproductions of Saint-Exupery's original drawings. The text is presented unabridged and includes John Richardson Miller's Introduction to the author's Life and works, notes, a bibliography, and a complete end vocabulary. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xv, 111 pages. pages .
