About This Item
Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1874. Hardcover. Very Good. 3 vols. frontis (sketch-map), index, xx, 274, vi, 294, [vi], 270p. Rebound (not recently) in plain blue cloth. 15cm. Corners lightly bumped and there is a touch of fraying here and there along extremities. Half-titles present. Circular stamp on half-title in Vol. I: "The Colonial Book & News Stores Port Said Egypt" with a handwritten date of 1896. Small name plate of a former owner in each volume. Collection of British Authors, Tauchnitz Edition, Nos. 1400-1402. This Tauchnitz edition was the third chronologically, but Mullan's edition of 1879 is generally designated as the third edition since the Tauchnitz edition was a foreign (i.e. non-English) edition. Burton wrote a preface specifically for the Tauchnitz edition, which appears at pages xii-xviii in Vol. I. The map is different from those in the previous editions, and the appendices of the first and second editions are omitted, as was some text.
