Fading to spines, creeping slightly onto boards. Wear to edges and corners. Slight lean to boards of II. Age-toning to page edges. Decorated endpapers. 1913 signature to both feps but contents o/w clean without inscriptions, foxing or other marks. Vol. I: xxx, 436 pp.; frontispiece and 10 illustrations inc. 2 folding plans. Vol. II: xii, 479 pp. inc. index; frontispiece and 21 other illustrations. Includes an introduction by Stanley Lane-Poole as well as the prefaces to the First and Third Editions. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Capt. Sir Richard Burton's 'Pilgrimage' was first published in 1855. In the 'Memorial Edition' of 1893, the author's copies of the four previous editions were collated, and MS notes as well as important emendations and additions were incorporated. This edition was reprinted for Bohn's Popular Library in 1913. Burton's travels around Arabia, disguised as Mirza Abdullah, still make a fascinating read. Top closed-edges tinted red, inscription-free but for minimal ex-library markings (incl "WITHDRAWN" stamps), a paper-clip or footprint on a prelim of each vol, gilt spine-titles and front-&-rear cover decorative figures, on black cloth that is rubbed through on corners. Unusually good ex-library condition for this age, no loosened pages, sl worn, a little light foxing or handling throughout, a gluing crack or two (but quite sound) and sl rubbing wear to covers. The 1893 Memorial Edition of " the Works" comprised 3 separate titles, this being one complete title Burton's Pilgrimage to AL-MEDINAH & MECCA
