About This Item
First edition of the memoirs of one of the most recognized figures in American military history, illustrated with portrait frontispieces, numerous steel engravings, facsimiles and 43 maps, in deluxe publisher's covers. Two volumes.
The cover spines of both book have the name James R. Challen embossed above the embossed titles. Challen was a Lieutenant Colonel in the 69th Ohio volunteer regiment in the Civil War. Challen relocated to Jacksonville, Florida after the war. I purchased the book from an estate sale held at a home on Challen Ave. in Jacksonville. The street was named after him and I believe the estate was that of his descendants.
The covers are worn and part of volume one spine cover is detached. It is the part that shows Challen's name. The pages and binding are complete and secure. The cover hinges are broken.
