Description:
Washington, D.C.: R.C. Weightman, 1808. Hardcover. Near Fine. 123, [1] p.; 21 cm. Modern binding: black cloth spine with gilt-tooled spine title; flax paper dyed brown with aniline dye over acid-free boards. "April 12, 1808. Printed by order of the Senate." Includes communications by B.H. Latrobe and Robert Fulton on the subject of canals. Howes, G27. Albert Gallatin was Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1813. He advocated an ambitious program to improve the nation's transportation infrastructure for which he was unable to muster enough support at the federal level. As had been traditionally done, such improvements were instead accomplished piecemeal during the 19th century by local governments, and by private road and canal companies. In Near Fine Condition: pages are browning but clean and tight.

Description:
1934 1st ed Herbert Hoover SIGNED Challenge to Liberty on Franklin Roosevelt
"Children are our greatest natural resource."
― Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States known for his business plans during the Great Depression. Shortly following his presidency and retirement from politics, he published 'The Challenge to Liberty' which was a harsh, critical work of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, calling much of Roosevelt's plans 'fascist'! According to Polenberg,
"Hoover raised an important issue when he claimed that big government would attempt to protect itself from criticism by blocking the free flow of information and therefore represented an insidious threat to freedom of speech and the press."
This 1934 first edition is signed by author and former president Herbert Hoover!

Second edition, full leather, Troy, New York, 1797. Includes the occasionally missing frontis. Condition is Good or better: original full leather boards in above average condition with modest general wear. Only the bottom front corners show slightly more than minimal wear. The other corners, edges, spine and hinges are sound. Binding is sound. Leather label on spine still legible although that is not well seen on images. Interior is likewise in good condition. Only writing is old faded ink signature on back free blank. No other writing; mild to moderate foxing throughout. The laid cotton paper pages are still supple and easily read. The title page has a 3 inch closed tear expertly repaired (see image). There are some minor edge tears seen throughout but none affecting text. Paginates: blanks(2), frontis, (i)-180, blank(1). I suspect one rear blank leaf is missing, otherwise paginates complete as issued. Please see images of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: First edition is 1797,… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
