About This Item

Salt Lake City, UT: Charles Ellis Johnson, 1915. Ephemera. Near Fine. 9 cm x 14 cm. Charles Ellis Johnson was an active and prolific photographer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He owned his own photography studio (Sainsbury & Johnson, located at the corner of Main and South Temple streets) and took many photographs documenting the activities of the LDS Church throughout the late-1800s and early-1900s. In addition, Johnson produced many photographs for the Salt Lake City Theater, and even created risqué and artistic nude photos — quite uncommon for a man of his social standing in his time and place.
