The Pennington Seminary, founded in 1838, known today as The Pennington School is located in Pennington, New Jersey. At its inception, it was an all boys academy and became a co-ed school in 1854. In 1910, the prep became a school for boys once more.
This 72 leaves/144 pages, 9 1/4" x 12" school boy's scrapbook album contains approximately 150 photographs, newspaper clippings, school songs, bills & programs. This material in this album was made between 1910-1913. There is one item from 1901, and one from 1909.
Inside the front cover, "UNDERHILL" is stamped indicating the property of Arther Underhill, class of 1913. Underhill was an industrious young man. He was a member of the Alpha Omega fraternity, track & field, gymnastics, football, and baseball. He won "Neatest Room in Liberty Hall" for which he received $5.
Almost all of the newspaper clippings are to do with the school's sports teams, including football, racketball, baseball, etc. Several photographs document the fraternities at the time: Delta Delta, Alpha Omega, and Philomathean (all of which are well-labeled with names of the boys). There are programs and bills from sports meets, glee club concerts, and commencement. Several school songs and yells are scattered throughout the album, one such song's last stanza is as follows:
"When from these halls we scatter,
Far over land and sea,
True to our Alma Mater
Ever our hearts shall be.
And we'll all work together,
For honor of old Pen. Sem.
Forever and forever,
Forever for old Pen. Sem."
A loose pamphlet provides a tour of campus, with enticing slogans and description, including the schools' motto at the time: "Superior training without extravagance".
There are some missing photographs and six are loose. The binding of the covers to the spine is threadbare. There is some staining due to the newspaper throughout. In good overall condition.
