About This Item

London: Seeley, Service & Co. Limited. Very Good- in Fair dust jacket. 1923/4. 3rd Edition ?. Hardcover. Turquoise/Green cloth boards with deep black titling to the spine and with a black illustration of a camel and man on front cover. In the original publisher's decorated dustjacket. The boards show a little 'bumping', rubbing and some slight edgewear here and there, but in general are bright and clean as they have been protected by the (scarce) dustjacket. The dustjacket has a lot of closed tears all of which are now neatly repaired to the reverse of the d/j with clear archive tape, but has some loss to the top and bottom of the spine - which is also sunned/stained - the loss to the head of the spine affects the word 'Pennell' - but all other lettering/titling is still extant and the d/j is otherwise complete, not even clipped. The dustjacket also states on the spine "Fourth and Cheaper Edition" and the rear of the d/j is advertising " Seeley's New Travel Books, Autumn 1924 - BUT the Title page states "Third Edition" and has the date '1923' at the foot of the Title Page....so....? ? . The repaired dustjacket is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks quite acceptable. There is some LIGHT foxing (brown spots) to the page fore-edges and also on the pages throughout the book up to & around page 55, and also lightly affecting the last few pages and the Map at the end. A former owner's name/address date - and 'M I.6' - written on the top of the front pastedown/ffep o/w No other Inscriptions or Marks. (xiii) + (Map) + 464 pp. Illustrated with 20 b/w photo illustrations on 16 plates. Plus a single page Map of the Bannu District, and a larger fold-out Map of Northern India at the end of the book before the Index. Glossary = Table of the Chief sounds represented in the Government system of Transliteration; A Pronounciation of the Principal Oriental words used in this book; and A Glossary of Words not generally used outside India. All hinges tight and Overall, apart from the 'faults' as noted above, this is a Clean, Tight and Bright copy in the original (if puzzling) fair dustjacket. Images available on request.
