About This Item

(Paris): (Editions de la Maison Française), 1947. Near fine in original slipcase.. Limited edition of this illustrated 18th-century French tragedy with abolitionist themes - with a numbered print by Friesz loosely laid in. The story of two French colonist children who grow up side-by-side in Mauritius and fall in love, only to be torn apart by class expectations. PAUL ET VIRGINIE is punctuated by anti-slavery sentiments, part of Saint-Pierre's desire to explore the possibility of "building a new society free of specific, clearly identified European ideals" (Wasserman, 104). This limited edition features illustrations by Fauvist E. Othon Friesz, and was published two years before his death. 11'' x 8.75''. Original stiff wrappers. Original glassine. Illustrated in color. [8], LVI, 146, [4] pages in loose folia. Black-and-white Friesz print numbered 92/230 loosely laid in. In original stiff folder with title to spine, and original slipcase. Slipcase with some edgewear, light shelfwear; small bump to rear. Folder spine a bit sunned. Glassine with mild bumping to spine ends. Interior clean and bright.
