About This Item

London: William Collins, 1972. First edition. Octavo, original white paper boards, original dust jacket. Fine.

"AFTER JESUS, PAUL IS THE KEY FIGURE IN THE WHOLE CHRISTIAN STORY" First edition of this extended dialogue on St. Paul between longtime friends Malcolm Muggeridge and Alec Vidler. Based on the five-episode BBC Television series from the previous year, the conversation is divided into sections headed: The Convert, The Christian, The Evangelist, The Missionary, The Martyr. Beautifully illustrated throughout with chapter-opening maps and 24 photographic color plates, including a double-page map, "Paul Journeys," and a frontispiece: "St. Paul being mocked by his audience" (a tenth-century illumination of a codex in the monastery of St. Gallen). The text is prefaced with "Variations on a Theme," a selection of quotes by prominent religious figures and closes with A. L. Lilley's prayer "Soul of St. Paul."
