About This Item

Boston: D. & L. Slade Co, [1917]. Illustrated by USFA emblem in red and blue, blue full page slade ads each rear cover. First edition. Stapled pamphlet. 6.875-inches (17,5cm). pp. 12. Near Fine. Covers de-acidified to light toning. Thirty-four USFA approved WW I recipes using Slade extracts and spices. Known as the Spice Slades, the company was founded in 1837 by Henry, the father after purchasing the 1735 tide mill. It was located at the border of Chelsea and Revere outside of Boston and ground corn and tobacco. The two sons brought to market a test batch of mill-ground cinnamon sticks and the response made them change businesses. In 1867 they bought Bell's Seasoning (a blend of rosemary, ginger, oregano, sage and marjoram) and didn't change a thing. The Slade brand spices were dissolved in the 1970's but Bell's Seasoning remains the go-to poultry and stuffing flavoring at American Thanksgiving..
